When the Africa Earth Observation Challenge (AEOC) was launched in 2016, the vision was clear: to show that space-derived data could power solutions to Africa’s most pressing challenges.
Ten years later, the AEOC has grown from a national competition into Africa’s flagship innovation pipeline, supporting more than 300 startups across 23 countries and supported by more than 38 partners.
However, the numbers alone don’t tell the story. What truly matters is impact, real-world results, lessons learned, and how this knowledge shapes the future.
In an effort to measure out impact, we are proud to be releasing the AEOC 10-Year Impact Report, the first comprehensive evidence base of what a decade of Earth Observation (EO) innovation can achieve across Africa.
It highlights the four areas where innovators have made tangible progress:
- Agriculture: Startups using EO data to boost yields and reduce water use through precision farming.
- Climate & Water: Innovations mapping floods, droughts, and water resources in real time to protect communities.
- Technology & Data: African-led ventures tackling the challenges of big EO datasets.
- Human Capital: A pipeline of innovators — from learners in AEOC Junior to alumni scaling businesses across the continent.
By capturing both successes and challenges, the AEOC has laid a strong foundation for monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) that will guide the next decade.
From Competition to Pipeline
One of the most important lessons of the past 10 years is that competitions alone are not enough. Identifying talent is a start, but innovation requires continuity, inclusion, and sustainability.
That is why AEOC is evolving into a 5-stage innovation funnel that nurtures innovators at every stage:
- AEOC Junior – Inspiring Learners (14–18): AEOC Junior introduces high school learners to EO and entrepreneurship through innovation clubs, toolkits in multiple languages, and mentorship from AEOC alumni. By embedding diversity and inclusion at this early stage, reaching girls, rural learners, and differently abled students. AEOC will ensure that the next generation of innovators sees space-tech as a path they belong in.
- Post-School Pathways – Equipping Young Graduates: For young people completing school or tertiary education, AEOC provides bootcamps and internships that expose them to the practical applications of EO. This stage bridges the gap between education and the job market, ensuring graduates don’t just leave with qualifications, but with skills, networks, and pathways into the innovation ecosystem.
- The Challenge – Discovering and Showcasing Top Innovators: The AEOC Challenge remains the flagship competition, where the best ideas from across the continent are spotlighted. Startups pitch their EO-driven solutions in sectors like agriculture, water, climate, mining, and health. This stage is about visibility and helping innovators secure credibility, partners, and early traction.
- Incubation & Regional Hubs – Scaling Startups into Businesses: We’ve learned that winning ideas need more than recognition, they need resources, guidance, and markets. Through regional hubs and incubation programmes, AEOC helps startups refine their products, test them with users, and access regional markets. By decentralising this stage across Africa’s regions, AEOC ensures local ownership while feeding into a continental innovation pipeline.
- Investor Readiness and Alumni Network – Ensuring Scale and Sustainability: The final stage prepares ventures to attract and manage investment, while also embedding alumni as mentors, investors, and champions. The AEOC Alumni Network creates a cycle of continuity: past innovators give back to support the next wave, while also accessing networks for partnerships and funding themselves. This stage ensures AEOC is not just producing innovators, but building an ecosystem that sustains itself.
This model ensures that talent is not only discovered but also nurtured, supported, and connected to funding and markets.
Why It Matters
Impact is more than just a metric, it’s the measure of credibility and trust. It’s what convinces governments, funders, and partners that investing in Africa’s innovation ecosystem delivers results.
For funders and policymakers, impact data provides proof that EO innovation is not theoretical, it is producing measurable socio-economic change. Evidence of improved yields, reduced disaster losses, or expanded digital tools builds confidence to scale investment.
For startups, impact stories validate their work. Demonstrating traction — such as farmers adopting precision agriculture tools, or cities using EO data to manage water systems — translates into market credibility, investor confidence, and stronger business cases.
For communities, impact is felt in daily life. EO stops being about satellites in orbit and becomes about food security, safer cities, cleaner water and climate resilience. These lived benefits are what ultimately anchor public support and relevance.
For Africa’s ecosystem, impact shows the continent is not just participating in global space-tech innovation but is increasingly leading it. African innovators are producing world-class EO solutions that rival international peers while addressing uniquely African challenges.
That is why AEOC at 10 is not a conclusion, but a launchpad. With new initiatives like the Alumni Network, AEOC Junior, and the forthcoming Startup Insights Platform, the next decade will be about scaling EO innovation with inclusion, intelligence, and sustainability at its heart.
